Panorama Acres Islands

Property owners share recreational use of two islands (see pictures below).  One island is over 4 acres in size and has some great camping spots.  Drive your 4x4 over or take the metal walkbridge to the island.  From this island, you can reach the second island by crossing the swinging bridge.  The Homeowners Association has began building a picnic shelter and restroom adjacent to the islands.

This picture was taken from the Panorama Acres boat dock.  You're looking downstream at Claytor Lake.  The dock makes a great place to throw out your fishing line.  Although it's a bit hard to make out, there are 4 fishing boats in this picture which was taken on a sunny February day.

New River Trail State Park

One of the most popular attractions in Virginia runs right through Panorama Acres - the New River Trail State Park.  Lots 25-28 and Lot 1 actually border the trail.  There is an access trail and easement located on Panorama Acres II between lots 26 and 27 that allows direct access to the trail.

"The trail offers 57 miles of parkland travels through two tunnels of practically 200 feet in length, onto three major bridges of heights from 670 feet to 1,089 feet and across 30 smaller bridges and trestles.  Mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding are the most popular attractions to the New River Trail.  Under agreement with the U.S. Forest Service, the New River Trail now connects with the Virginia Creeper Trail and over 100 miles of pristine mountain trails.  This park is in close proximity to Mt. Rogers National Recreational Area, two Department of Game and Inland Fisheries boat launches and Shot Tower Historical State Park, which is just feet from the New River Trail State Park."  Information courtesy of Yahoo! Claytor Lake and New River

New River was dammed in the 1940s near Radford, Virginia to create hydroelectric power.  Claytor Lake begins at Panorama Acres.  The 4500 acre lake that winds through the foothills for over 20 miles.  Enjoy fishing for largemouth, striped, smallmouth, white or rock bass.  It also holds varieties of crappie, flathead catfsh, channel catfish, walleyes and muskie.  A public (free) boat ramp is located less than 1/2 mile from Panorama Acres.  Several marinas are located within a 15 minute drive and offer boating/sporting sales and docking services for your boat.  Claytor lake is a great place to ski, swim, or just relax and enjoy its scenic beauty.  An appealing feature of Claytor Lake is that it is not as crowded as most lakes because a majority of its shorelines are too mountainous for easy public access.

Wakeboarding on Claytor

Set sail 12 miles upstream at Foster Falls and enjoy a day of innertubing, canoeing, or kayaking fun on the river and you'll eventually arrive back at Panorama Acres.  The New River is thought by many to be the second oldest river in the world.  It has carved out stunning rock walls and a trip down its waters will delight any nature lover.

The Caverns

The Panorama Acres caverns are located just off Webb Road on land that is part of the original Panorama Acres subdivision.  Easements for access to the caverns are recorded, and any Panorama Acres II lotowners may partake in spelunking (cave exploring) activities there.  There are three caverns in the hillside-- note that only the rightmost one is safe for the novice explorer.  Anyone who wants to enter the cavern should contact JC Hendrix for a key to unlock the gate located approx 50' inside the cavern.  These are not on the scale Carlsbad, Dixie Caverns or Ruby Falls but they do have some interesting stalactite and stalagmite formations.  One of the rooms has an angled ceiling expanding up to nearly 40 feet in height.  It is a cool 54 degrees year round and home to a few bats and at one point a humongous rat... so if you don't mind getting extremely muddy, aren't afraid of a few critters, don't get claustrophobic, and have a propensity for adventure then you could be in for a real underground treat!  We hope to post some pictures soon.
